2 shops-Memphis '04
Home Up

There are several shops in Memphis but, I was on a run and way behind so, I was only able to go to the public school facility and these two home grown-
         Music Store/Repair Shops.

             AMRO Music  and  Mid-South Music

Here is Mid-South Music; since 1979, Joe and Debbie Sellmansberger have been repairing and selling band instruments and putting 3 kids through school.  Joe is a very skilled Brassman with a gregarious Blacksmith's build and savvy.  Debbie is as good at woodwinds as Joe is at brass; that is according to others I talked with.
All is clean and modern as they occupy a former free standing bank building, in fact, Debbie's work area is in the safe, the whole safe.  As you can see she is always busy.  The door they removed weighed over 1500#.

Here is Joe and his favorite toy, er, tool.    This Z60/61 is mostly used on Tubas.

Joe's special roller, you can get one, too.    Hey, a 4 valve, rotary Bass trombone.

Here is Debbie's bench in the safe.                 Here are her 'stored' extra parts.

Here are Joe and Debbie, Joe loves her, so do we.      Debbie's extra parts in use.

Here is AMRO Music, probably the biggest and oldest establishment in the area.  The ship is guided by Chip Averwater who is the second generation at the task.
Their shop has 6 full time and 6 part time personnel depending on the time of year; overseen by Cliff Acred.
You may remember one of their men, Daryle Vinson, coming up to a dent machine repair course a year or so ago and having us re-outfit their old Wuttke machine with all new Ferree's tooling; the new lower leg with the Ferree mandrel clamp, the power discs, new rollers, etc.  He is now medically retired, but the dent machine has been ably taken over by a hard working fellow named Jobie Kilzer, Jr. and Rick Dolan.
AMRO occupies a modern 3 story building and the repair shop is on the 2nd floor.  All is clean and modern with pianos and organs mixed with band instruments.  You can take an elevator up or walk up the very modern staircase finished in wood and stainless steel.

Here is shop supervisor Cliff Acred.        The Ferree modified machine mentioned.

Good setup for the dent machine tools.     A complete assortment of rods and rollers.

Here are both sides of the dent machine work bay, a very nice work area.

A shot up through the shop, neat storage.    Here is an isolated woodwind bench.

Here are a couple shots of all the storage and stowage that every shop needs.

Small but, workable buffing room.         Large stainless sink in the cleaning room.
