We have been repairing and replating these tools for years.
Of course,
you can extend the life of your expandable tool by cleaning the inside of
the slide before using the tool. A sonic cleaner works well for this
purpose. We have even used an old inside slide, which we swedged or flaired out
with pliers and used as a scraper to loosen and remove the calcium and lime
build up inside of the outer slide tube; then cleaning in the conventional manner
before inserting the expandable tool. Even then, after a time, usage will add up and
you've worn thru the plating. We cannot re-machine the fingers of the tool, so
if they've been bent, filed or ground on, we can't save it. But, if it is just worn out, we can make it almost like new.
