H58 Heavy Duty Tenon Swedger
Originally intended for just Saxophone Neck tenons, optionally, this tool will work on Bass clarinets, too!

Pictured,
in black finish is Ferree's H58 Heavy Duty
Tenon Shrinker (swedger), which will shrink both Sax and
Flute tenons, also pictured are a competitors units, one for flute and one for saxes,
which adds to your costs.
The H58 mounts in your vise. It comes equipped with 6
collets for most alto and tenor saxes in existence, and release wrench.
Two of the collets provided fit most alto saxes and the four larger collets fit
most tenor sax tenons. There are other collets for 'orphan' saxes and we will make any
special size you need as well. Also pictured are two special dies made for
shrinking flute tenons.
~There are two methods used to shrink the tenons~
One is
to use the tool much the same as you would a flute tenon shrinker. That is
tightening the tool a little and turning the neck, being careful not to kink it.
The second method and most preferred is to just put the neck tenon into the tool
and tighten the tool 1/4 turn, loosen the tool, move the neck 1/4 turn and then
tighten the tool 1/4 turn again, repeating until you get all the way
around. Test fit and then if necessary, only go 1/8 turn the next time
around at each step. You get the idea.
Best results are obtained if you limit shrinking to about .010"
per collet.
Other sizes available for Baritone saxes, Bass
Clarinets and some odd alto, tenor and C-melody saxes. We know the sizes, if you need
them*.
This great tool, complete as stated, is just $239.50
*All the other potential
saxophone collets are available as options.
Optional and Special sax collets are just $24.50 &
up, each +s/h
Two collets for
flutes H58FC-.780 & F58FC-.790 are $49.50 each
Gary: I just wanted to let you know that you continue to
amaze me with the great new sax tools I've been getting from you! The H-58 neck
shrinking tool is a winner, and more importantly, a real money maker for our
shop. For the very first time, we've been able to get the customer's neck tenon
PERFECTLY round quickly without excessive lapping and the resultant loss of
metal. I've found that rotating the neck in the tool works much better than
doing one "big squeeze", and using the H-58 in conjunction with the expander
that I bought from your father 30+ years ago (and it still works great!) allows
us to do really precise work on this critical and often overlooked part of
saxophone repair. It's quick, and all of my "elves" learned the procedure
quickly and easily. Thanks! Steve Goodson, the Sax Gourmet
Dear Gary, The sax tenon compressor has such a practical, effective design and works like a
charm. In combination with the expander, tenon fits can be brought to be "dead
on" instead of "good enough" - such that the receiver screws only need a slight
twist to hold the neck steady. Of course, you knew this already. Ed at Saxmaniacs
