Band Directors who made Good
Yes, Band
Instructors who went on....
to become Repairmen!
And, you can't keep a good man down,
so some went even further!
For the FIRST entry, we have Clifford Blackburn.
Clifford Blackburn, manufacturer of trumpets and parts,
excelsior!
To wit, "The Blackburn
Trumpet" and the "Louisville Leadpipe".

Mr. Blackburn, was a band director down South, and he decided to
repair some horns for the kids so they wouldn't have be without them so long and besides, the kids were
making him crazy. He came to my Dad and explained his predicament and my Dad
fixed him up with what he needed and Mr. Blackburn went back home and started to fix horns, part time.
In a few years, he was making as much fixin' as he was teachin' and went 100% into repairing.
Eventually, he got real good and surmised he could make better horns than were being then offered. So, he
started manufacturing his own brand of trumpets and "Louisville" mouthpipes. He
has made many improvements in the process of manufacturing his trumpets and now makes about one a week, and
is two years behind. It is better to keep the quality up than to get in a big hurry. It is not
about money, it's about quality. Mr. Blackburn related this story to me when I was in Bowling Green,
KY at a seminar he gave on quality. As you can see, Cliff's wife helps in the shop,
too!
