     The N79 set is designed to punch larger holes in standard flute pads for use in open hole or French-type flutes, so that repairmen and dealers don't have to inventory two different stocks of pads.  The N79 set consists of two brass centering dies and the N79P punch. The dies both are machined for two sizes of pads so the set covers 4 sizes of pads.  The punch is sized to provide proper clearance around the chimney in the pad cup for the pad retaining grommet to work.  These dies also act as a pilot to keep the punch centered on the pad.  It is also recommended that you use either a P28 Cutting Pad, or an L24 Lead Block to protect the cutting edge when using this tool.  (The standard repair replacement N79P punch is also available at just $19.50+s/h)

     Pictured below is the N79 set with the new N79Y punch on the right.  There is a punched pad in the die on the right.  As you can see the new N79Y punch is smaller than the standard N79P French hole punch that comes with the N79.
                               
     After attending several Flute Pad Clinics or Seminars recently, I found that some pad distributors were actually selling pads with too small a hole in them to fit the Yamaha flutes. Yamaha's pad retaining spud is raised in the pad cup instead of blended in and if you don't have a big enough hole in the pad, it keeps the outer edge of the pad elevated so that you can't level or seat it properly.
