What about Magnetic Dent Removal?
We do NOT sell "dent"
magnets.
Here's why.
Ferree's has been involved with magnetic dent removal since the late 50's.
A young repairman
came to us with this working but rough idea and after his demonstration, we bought into his
idea and gave him a monetary advance and pat on the back to continue to develop it.
If someone "invented" this 'idea', must'a been him.
We
also worked on it, with it, around it, but, it
just didn't do a good enough job. We spent many hours, which turned into weeks and even months, on it. We wanted
it to work. Of course we were using sintered iron
magnets, and later electro magnets. My friend, Merle Johnson, former CEO of E.K. Blessing, Inc.
had a small electric one we called, "the Cricket"; for the noise that it made. I used that thing for
several years when I was helping him and it only did mediocre work at best, but,
at least you could turn it OFF. You still had to
know what you were doing, and we could make it right using conventional
means. We revisited the idea again in the 60's with other types of magnets,
but, still had the dual nemesis of 'uncontrolled forces and a mediocre
job'. NO SALE. Now, General Motors Corp. has this
New, Neodymium
"Super-Magnet". The dangers of strong magnet use
CANNOT be over
emphasized! We feel that there are MANY inherent dangers in using
these magnets, uncontrolled, for dent
removal. The danger and injury factors are REAL, SERIOUS and Cannot Be
Ignored! Safe storage, handling and distribution are problems. What if
someone, unknowing, wandered through your shop and got injured?
We have held back on this method of dent removal for nearly 50 YEARS; because, we were concerned
with the safety and well being of our customers, as well as the fact that
IT ONLY PRODUCED MEDIOCRE RESULTS.
You may want to use this type system--EVEN knowing its inherent dangers, but, that would be
up to YOU! ALSO, USING MAGNETS FOR DENT REMOVAL IS NOT FOR PEOPLE OF FRAIL HEALTH.
The magnets, in some cases, can out power you and they CAN affect pacemakers.
This method requires a strong body AND a vigilant, sharp and cautious mind;
and even that may not be enough. I personally don't know anyone who has used magnets
to repair that has not been injured, nipped or more severe; including myself. SO; 1.) We
Have the knowledge.
2.) We Have the equipment and balls. 3.) We Have the experience. 4.) We
Can tell you-the Good, the Bad and the UGLY. 5.) We Can and Have WARNED YOU.
Removing dents with magnets may look like an easy way out, but, we feel the liabilities
far outweigh the benefits. Lastly, we won't be making any of these types
of tools, until they
are RIGHT and SAFE. Take care of your hands.
P.S. Even though we do not endorse these products
due to safety concerns; here is an informative link
that will get you a fairly thorough overview of the subject. If
followed, YOU'LL KNOW what you are dealing with and
YOU can MAKE YOUR OWN INFORMED DECISION.
