 The Z60's Birthday

          ~~Continuing a 43 year Legacy~~

"A duplicate of a letter written over 43 years ago, typo's and all."

                                                                                           September 11, 1964

Gentlemen:

This letter has two messages, one with good news and one with bad news.

First of all--the good news.  The long awaited shipping date of our new Z60 Dent
Removing Machine is just around the corner.  Making a production run sufficiently
large to take care of the convention orders and the expected orders when the formal
advertising goes out took longer than we expected.  However, target date for shipping
the machines ordered in Chicago is September 21, 1964, a short 10 days away.

This brings us to the bad news.  We can usually cut costs substantially on a
production run after making the advance prototype of a new tool.  However, on the
Z60 Dent Removing Machine, this did not work out.  Although a small saving was made
on quantity material purchases, the machine precision work took just as long.  In
addition, there is a great deal of hand fitting that could not be eliminated.  We
felt it wise to enlarge several of the parts, including the rollers, for increased
efficiency.  The bearings were enlarged for smoother action (at increased cost).  A
change was made in the base of the machine to accomodate a future companion section
for sousaphone branches (as we discussed with a few of you in Chicago).

Everything considered, we do not feel that we can offer this machine for less
than $295.00.  We regret this very much, especially in view of the fact that we opt-
mistically quoted the machine at $250.00 in Chicago.  We realize this is not good
business, but we feel sure that our customers will support us on this, knowing that
we have always tried to offer our tools at the most economical price possible.

Those of you who ordered the machine on the basis of seeing it work, know what
it will achieve.  You will agree, I am sure, that $295 is still a realistic price
and that the machine is well worth it.

If you feel that you do not wish to accept the machine at the new higher price,
please advise us to cancel your order on the enclosed form.  We will understand and
there will be no hard feelings.

If we do not hear from you by September 21st, we will proceed to ship you your
Z60 Dent Machine.  Thank you.

                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                    C. M. Ferree
